The Blowing Rock Country Club golf course sits astride the Eastern Continental Divide, 4,000 feet above sea level, partly in Watauga County. The golf course came first and had 9 holes that were open to the public. The club had the grand opening of its original clubhouse in July of 1941. The golf shop was moved to the clubhouse and the order of the golf holes changed to make play begin and end at the clubhouse.
In January of 1973, the Club bought the golf course. The Club added 9 more holes and renovated the original 9. Tragically, on September 21, 1974, the rustic and beautiful old clubhouse, dedicated only 23 years earlier, burned to the ground. Within a year, however, the Club had approved architect renderings and a new clubhouse was built and opened the following year.
